Where Does Spirulina Come From?

Spirulina is a microscopic blue-green algae known for it many health benefits.

The algae is grown in many Spirulina farms around the world.  Some of the largest farm can be found in Hawaii, California, and Mexico.  Other countries known to grow a lot of Spirulina include Benin, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chad, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, France, India, Madagascar, Peru, Israel, Spain, Thailand, Togo, and Vietnam.

In many of the countries where Spirulina is grown, it is harvested by hand.  The harvested Spirulina strands are set out on racks to dry.  Once the Spirulina has dried out, it is ground into a fine powder.  The Spirulina powder is then used in many other products.  Some companies create Spirulina tablets that help make it easy to take a daily dose of Spirulina.  Dried Spirulina is also sold in its raw powder form and can be used to mix into drinks or foods.
